Yum Pla Krapong

Spicy tin fish Thai salad (Yum Pla Krapong ยำปลากระป๋อง)

Cooking time: 2mins
Serves: 2 people

Ingredients

  • 1 tin of fish - Pilchards in tomato sauce
  • corriander (optional)
  • Half of lemongrass
  • 1 shallot
  • Juice of half of a lime
  • 2 chilli
  • Kaffir lime leaves (optional)

This is a very simple dish that requires no cooking but is packed full of flavour. Because there’s no cooking involved, it can be made anywhere.

I used to be a girl scout when I was in secondary school and everyone had to learn how to pitch a tent and cook by ourselves. When we went camping, we used to pack our bags full of tin fish and instant noodles. That way we knew we could always cook up something quick and easy, but also taste delicious. For us, this dish was perfect to save time on a busy day. And it is very healthy because there are a lot of herbs in this dish.

Once again when I moved to the UK and with a busy life, working and taking care of my children, sometimes you forgot to think about what’s on a plate today. So I have to stock up some tin fish and some other ingredients in my pantry. Or some rainy days that you don’t want to walk out the door to go shopping. This dish will save your stomach.

You could have this as a side dish or served with rice as a light meal. Give it a try and let me know how it goes.

Method

  1. Thinly slice the lemongrass, shallots, kaffir lime leave (if you have), and cut the lime
  2. Place the tin fish in a nice flat plate and add all the herbs above on top
  3. Eat and Enjoy - it's that easy :-)
